Go Fly A Kite is the fifth studio album from Ben Kweller, an artist who has spent the last ten years releasing solo albums largely to a cult following. Ben’s songs have always been full of melodies and great hooks that are very radio friendly, yet for some reason he has been one of those artists who has not received the mainstream attention that his songs really deserve.
Thankfully with this new album Ben has not had a change of direction and has stuck to what he knows best, which is writing damn good pop songs. The lyric in opening track ‘Mean To Me’ goes some way to summing up how Ben feels about his approach to music “Don’t regret anything I ever did, because I always knew where I was coming from”. Ben has spent his time writing the songs that he loves and not trying to please everyone else.
Standout tracks on the album include ‘Full Circle’, a country lead melody with vocal harmonies that ensure this is a song impossible not to like, ‘The Rainbow’ is a beautiful piano led ballad and ‘I Miss You’, where you can hear Ben pouring his heartache into a song “I Miss You, I think about you everyday, wondering who you are laughing with right now”.
Go Fly A Kite may not win Ben any new fans but it will leave his existing fans with a smile from ear to ear.
7/10
