For anyone who checked out Cloud Nothings proper debut ‘Cloud Nothings’ (which was the solo work of Dylan Baldi) they will know that it was a jangley punk-pop album with a lot of heart. Full of catchy hooks and shout along choruses.
So now he/they (now a fully fleshed out band) release their second album produced by the legendary Steve Albini. Albini has been responsible for some of the greatest rock albums of the past twenty plus years. A lot can be said about his open door policy and his ‘anti’ production, but this is a record that really highlights his production skill by just stepping back and letting the band really do their thing.
That’s not to say that Albini’s skills as a producer should take anything away form the band, as this is an album that’s really progressed their sound. Its heavier, grungier and all out louder, yet they haven't lost that pop sensibility. The songs still have the same catchy hooks but now with bite…like a kitten with rabies!
It’s maybe a bit rough around the edges especially for those who don't really appreciate the grunge/emo scene of the 90's, but if this album doesn't leave you bouncing around the room, punching the air then you have no soul!
Rating: 9/10
