The Lion’s Roar is the second album from Stockholm based sisters Kiara and Johanna Soderberg. Since the release of their debut album last year, the girls have spent time recording with Jack White, touring with Bright Eyes and recording this second album with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters Of Folk).

The Lion’s Roar is an album full of sweet harmonies and country melodies. The real beauty of the album lies behind the sweetness of the music. There is a very dark aura and a resounding theme of loss to the songs that ensures The Lions Roar is an incredibly captivating album.

This is evident in the title track which opens the album with the lyric “Now the pale morning sings of forgotten things”. ‘Emmylou’ has a chorus and melody that could see this song ending up on many a radio station playlist. Once again as you get behind the joyful melody in ‘Emmylou’ you get drawn in by the dark lyrics “Oh the bitter winds are coming in, and I’m already missing the summer”.

Other standout tracks on the album include the heartbreaking ‘To a Poet’ with its gentle acoustic melody, haunting vocals and lyrics which are sure to bring you close to tears as the sisters sing “I miss you more than I can take and I will surely break, but there’s nothing more to it, I just get through it”. ‘Blue’ takes on the subject of a friend losing their lover, which sounds like a depressive theme but being sung over such a chirpy melody you can’t help but enjoy the song. ‘King Of The World’ ends the album in a very triumphant manner, the girls have enlisted the help of the Felice Brothers and Conor Oberst to end the album in a perfect foot stomping manner.

The Lion’s Roar is an album that manages to be dark, warm and lovely all at the same time.
