Usually to say an album has an atmosphere means that there's not a lot else to it but maybe you should be liking it. This is not the case with Hey Colossus, the atmosphere throughout this album is a general sense of impending doom! From opener ‘Teased from the Nest’ which sets pace with a dense almost soft (for this album) progression with sound FX used low on the mix to give the track an almost haunting feel. That is before second track ‘The Drang’ kicks in with an almost skull crushing ferocity. Tracks ‘RRR’ and ‘Rotated for Success’ run into each other perfectly, locking into almost cyclical hypnotic groove, reminiscent of a grungy/metal version of Fuck Buttons or Neu.
The calmest moment comes on track ‘Warmer the Belter’ which by this point feels like the calm after storm. Taking note of everything that has been ripped apart in the onslaught. Closing track ‘I am Bunga Bunga’ which most closely resembles something the Buttonhole Surfers may of put out, with its freaky use of vocals and FX and its almost psychedelic groove. This is a dense album and defiantly won’t appeal to the masses, but this is Hey Colossus's 6th album and I think they are past that stage.
