Bird released their debut EP ‘Phantoms’ on Jack to Phono records on 31st October. Bird describe their music as being atmospheric folk and after listening to this EP that description is very accurate. This is a band who have clearly been influenced by the likes of Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Portishead and Leonard Cohen.
This EP is quite simply stunning. The lead song on the EP ‘Phantoms’ takes us down a very haunting road, yet, at the same time makes the listener feel safe and comfortable. ‘Phantom’ builds around the unique vocals of Adele with the atmospheric instrumentation setting the mood. This appears to be the theme throughout the EP. ‘Hey Hey Moonshine’ centres around an acoustic guitar melody, before building into a slightly more aggressive middle section as the backing vocals kick in. Adele’s vocals take centre stage to end the song as she pleads “Hey Hey Moonshine won’t you guide me the way to the river”. You quickly find that you have been completely captivated by the magic and beauty of this song.
“Tides” consists of harmonies, ambient instrumentation and is yet another example of the talent this band has.
‘The Witch Hunter’ ends the EP as it begun in a very dramatic and haunting way which will send shivers down your spine.
This is a band with a very unique sound who deserve to be discovered and enjoyed by all.
